Why You Must Love Yourself

“I must undertake to love myself and to respect myself as though my very life depends upon self-love and self-respect.”

—Maya Angelou

Introduction

The one person you must spend the rest of your life with is you. So if you don’t love yourself, you will be truly miserable.

What do I mean by loving yourself? I don’t define narcissistic, self-adoration, as loving yourself. What I mean instead, is accepting and caring about you, with all your imperfections.

The Critics Without Love

What would you say if I told you that you are good enough?

How would you respond if I asked you to stop listening to the critics in your head? You know what I am talking about.

There is a chorus, a team and an entire band of naysayers, who point out every little imperfection in your every move. They also point out that you didn’t try hard enough. And these critics take every opportunity to highlight the mistakes you made. In addition, they point out the ineffectiveness of your choices and the foolishness of your responses.

Most of these same commentators live in your head. They magnify every comment ever directed at you. In addition, they inflate every piece of criticism you’ve ever received. Your every weakness is placed under a microscope and analyzed with deliberate and exacting precision.

You are Human

Please give yourself a break. The reason is this. You need to remember that you are only human. And being human requires only one thing of you. Just to try.

You are unique and so different from any other human being. Your uniqueness distinguishes you from other people. So all you have to do is to try to become the best version of yourself. This is all you have to do.

Loving Yourself

So, keep trying and don’t give up. Try to do a tiny bit better everyday. If, in your climb upwards, you slip a little one day, pull yourself back up the next day. When you do slip up, the first thing you must do is to forgive yourself. Tell yourself that it is going to be alright. Don’t let your critics stop you from truly succeeding.

There is only one person that you really need to answer to. And that person is you. If you need to answer to anyone else, make sure that they are worthy of judging you. Remember that a lot of judgmental people are deeply insecure. So, instead of working on their mental health, they project their negativity onto you.

Care and Acceptance

You were created and came into being as you.

Care for yourself as you uniquely need to. You need rest and to take breaks. Maybe meditate or pray. When you care for and accept yourself, there is a very good chance that your life will be more blissful. You will experience true happiness and joy.

Conclusion

And the best part is, that the world will then be allowed to benefit from you, in all your glorious uniqueness.
